I hope they made it back. One always hears of bombers limping back minus chunks of wing or fuselage. Imagine being the tail gunnner. As if AAA and enemy fighters weren't bad enough, your own guys try to waste you with a 500 pound bomb.
I read that this was over Berlin in the summer of 1944 and they crew had to bail out as the plane was uncontrolable. I remember reading that it happened because the pilots in the lower plane were new and made a simple mistake. They got out of place and tied to get back to their slot in the formation. They ended up drifting gently under silk canopies into downtown Berlin. I'll see if I can find the reference for you.
